They are long, but probably shorter than playing the games. I'd recommend Joseph Anderson's video essays about the witcher on his YouTube channel. You don't comprehend Temeria's struggle for independence as well as you could, and a great deal of dialogue directly or indirectly references quests and characters from The Witcher 1 and 2, without playing it you just smile along with Geralt and think to yourself Oh I get it now! When in actuality you don't get it at all. You don't get that frustrated yet happy smile when Dandelion appears on the scene once again. You can't comprehend how great it is to see Zoltan. You can't fathom his relationship with Roche. What I'm saying is that it is impossible for you to get the full enjoyment and experience of following Geralt's (game) journey if you start at the end of his journey, instead of at the beginning. I'm sure lots of people saw Return of the Jedi as their first Star Wars film or went with their boyfriend/girlfriend to the sixth Harry Potter film and managed to find something they enjoyed, too. If you enjoy the Gothic games and are used to that late 90's/early 2000's Eurojank, you're going to absolutely love The Witcher 1 and 2. Those who only started with 3, or never played 3, are akin to a new friend entering a very old circle of friends- you laugh and smile at the jokes and references they are making, but you have no fucking idea what they're talking about because you were never there- you convince yourself you understand, but you really don't get it at all.Įdit:I saw your comments that you love Gothic. If you can, if you are able, do not skip Witcher 1 and 2. You can almost forgive the poor levelling system, the terrible economy, the godawful inventory management and other quality-of-life issues The Witcher 3 has because you, as Geralt, are seeing old friends again and helping them out in new, fantastical ways. I cannot stress enough how much better your Witcher 3 experience is, if you start with 1, play 2, and import your saves into 3. The combat/item system/inventory system are certainly not 10/10 or the primary draw for any of the Witcher games, it's really about the investment in the characters, story, and setting- and therefore, you'll get, at most, 33% of that if you jump right into The Witcher 3. The Witcher series is primarily, above all else, a story driven series- we like the plots, we like the characters. You lose an incredible amount of emotional investment, character interaction, subtleties and callbacks, relationship nuance, etc. Trying to play The Witcher 3 without playing 1 and 2 is like watching Return of the Jedi without A New Hope or Empire, or reading The Return of The King without Fellowship or Two Towers. r/Skelligers - r/freefolk equivalent of The Witcher.r/WitcherTRPG - For The Witcher Tactical role-playing game developed by R.r/wiedzmin - For The Witcher series in general, with emphasis on the source material (books).r/netflixwitcher - For the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher series.r/cyberpunkgame - For the upcoming role-playing video game developed by CDPR.r/gwent - For the standalone card game developed by CDPR set in the Witcher universe.Want to chat about the Witcher?
